The first impression
It is the first place you see upon arrival at Sifnos. Although it is the main port of the island, it is suitable for enjoying your swim, a promenade, a meal and even an evening drink.
Kamares is situated at the north-western side of the island and is the biggest seaside village. It is named after the many caves (“kamares” meaning “arches” in Greek) where fishermen used to keep their boats protected during winter. Today, they are replaced by houses and shops.
Entering the port, we notice at the left, on the mountain, the monasteries of Profitis Ilias Troulakios and Agios Simeon that really stand out. It is worth going up the vehicular way in order to enjoy the magnificent view. At the lower foothills of the mountain, we find the developing neighborhood of Agia Marina or Pera Panta. It is the best spot for anyone caring to appreciate the sunset.
At the foothills of the opposite mountain, all dug up due to the mines once found in the area, we find the central and more densely populated settlement. The dock, the information office, Automated Teller Machines, the Port Authority, travel agencies, restaurants, grocery stores, confectionaries, pottery workshops and exhibitions, hotels and rented rooms, all can be found here.
Between the two mountains, as a reference point of Kamares settlement, there is a stretch of sandy and comfortable shore, awarded a Blue Flag.
