A place of inner peace
Once you have reached Vathi, it is difficult to leave. The landscape and the serenity it radiates will enchant any visitor. The sandy beach and the calm sea nested in it offer a great opportunity for swim, delicious dishes at the various taverns and relax on the deck chair enjoying a refreshing cocktail.
Vathi is located at the south-western side of the island and is one of the most enclosed bays in Sifnos. It is situated “deeper” than the surrounding hills – “vathia” in Greek – that is why it is called “Vathi”.
Once, ten potteries operated here, producing mostly the famous cooking “tsikalia” (cooking pots) that were exported to the surrounding islands, Crete, Cyprus, even Alexandria of Egypt. In fact, nowadays, one of them is fully operational on the little beach of Tsopos.
At the right end of the beach, we come across the picturesque little church of Taxiarchis that, in recent years, many couples around the globe choose in order to get married. It is said that the icon of Taxiarchis (Archangel) was found on a rock inside the sea and the little church where it is housed was built afterwards.
Many restaurants, grocery stores, hotels and rented rooms can be found alongside the beach.
