The landlord and guardian

The settlement of Artemonas is located on a low-lying hill (365 m.), only one kilometer and a half (1.5 km) from Apollonia. It is named after Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, as in the region there was a temple dedicated to her.  It is the most populous settlement of the island, and in recent years shows strong signs of tourism-oriented development.

From the northern end of the settlement, one can overlook a big part of Sifnos and of the white-robed central settlements (Apollonia, Ano and Kato Petali, the Castle, Catavati, Exampela), as well as the surrounding islands (Syros, Paros, Antiparos, Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros). Many great men of politics and letters were born here. Among them, the great teacher and first minister of education of free Greece, Nikolaos Chrisogelos, and the famous poet and scholar Ioannis Griparis.

The access to Artemonas is possible from many different points. Most people enter the settlement through the square of Artemonas. Once you have crossed the two neoclassical buildings almost facing each other, you have entered the settlement. Along the paving there are many places of interest, such as traditional and modern confectionaries with local delicacies and modern specialties, restaurants and taverns, sites of art, a bookshop, a jewelry store and a museum of folklore art.

Quite impressive are the manors-neoclassical domiciles, almost the only ones with roof tiles, full of memories and stories of another era, created by natives of Artemonas of the diaspora. Next to these historical and exquisite buildings, the simple whitewashed houses of the plain but rich architecture complement, along with the four historical churches, the settlement of Artemonas.

Artemonas has many neighborhoods, each with its own history and beauty. The most important are:

  • The neighborhood of Panagia of Ammos (Virgin Mary of the Sand). Before being paved, the region accumulated piles of sand when raining, due to the downward formation of the location. The church and the homonymous neighborhood owe their name to that.
  • The neighborhood of Panagia of Kogchi. According to ancient traditions, this is where the center of worship of Artemis was located. Today we find here the church of Panagia of Kogchi, which is the official parish temple of Artemonas.
  • Liarokopi, where formerly a torrent overgrown with chaste trees was located. Wicker baskets were made from their osiers. A place of lush vegetation and numerous wells.
  • Epano Artemonas or neighborhood of Panagia of Bali. This neighborhood is situated higher above all the others and is rather densely populated. It is said that the icon of Virgin Mary, found in the temple, came from Bali, situated in Rethymno, Crete. At the crossroads after the temple, you can either go downhill left further north towards the neighborhood of Monachi or go uphill further east towards Agia Anna or Anemomili, where you can enjoy two well-preserved windmills and an unprecedented view.
