The safe heaven
Faros, even though considered a small seaside village, offers a variety of choices: three beaches, fresh seafood, relaxed walks by the waves.
It is located at the south-east side of Sifnos, only seven (7) kilometers from Apollonia and is considered the safest port of the island. Besides, until 1883 it was the basic port of the island. It owes its name to the lighthouse – Faros in Greek – visible at the monastery of the Cross.
Faros is a picturesque fishing village with three consecutive sandy beaches:
- Fasolou, south-east of the port in the way towards the monastery of the Cross. With its shady trees and its crystal clear waters, it is an ideal place for swimming. It possibly owes its name to the fact that the nearby fields are suitable for cultivating beans (“fasolia” in Greek).
- Faros, the port par excellence. Upon arrival, the part at the left is the bay where the fish boats are docked and the little church of Saint Gregory stands out. At the right side, we find the beach with the cafes and the beautiful taverns.
Glifo or Vlicho, a gorgeous cove with cool waters and an amazing landscape. It owes its name to the source of brackish water (“glifo” or “vlicho” in Greek) found in the area. At the western side, ruins of ore loading facilities are preserved. Finally, this is the starting point of the unique paved path that leads to Apokofto and the monastery of Panagia Chrisopigi.
